National Apprenticeship Week – a focus on our dental apprenticeships

“Go for it.”
That’s what Dental Practice Manager Lianne Graci would say to someone considering undertaking an apprenticeship.
After completing a Level 4 Dental Practice Manager Apprenticeship, Lianne is now studying a Level 5 Operations Manager Apprenticeship thanks to Poultec and Zandielle Dental Practice in Attleborough.
During National Apprenticeships Week (10th – 16th February), we’re highlighting how apprenticeships can help your career progression, including in business areas you might not have considered.
We sat down with Lianne to ask her a few questions:
What would you say to someone who is considering undertaking an apprenticeship?
“Go for it. It’s learning alongside working, You can implement what you’re learning in real time as you go along and you’ve got support from the tutors as well.”
Is there a misconception about apprenticeships?
“For the management side and working your way up, for me personally I didn’t realise that I would be able to go on an apprenticeship course. So it’s good to ask your employers what is available.”
What are the main things you’ve learnt?
“I’ve been able to support my team by helping them gain knowledge. You learn how to talk to people and how to train people, different aspects such as the financial and HR side of things. It’s been interesting to learn various aspects of management and implement it.”
We’ve also been speaking to one of our dental tutors, Anna Lown, to tell us a little bit about herself.
I was born in Norwich and have always lived Norfolk. I have a passion for hiking, running and competing in various endurance sports.
Fun fact about yourself
I have a flock of 40 Herdwick sheep and spend my spare time looking after them!
What is your job role and what does it involve?
I am the Lead Dental Tutor for Poultec. This involves quality management, course development and compliance.
Why did you decide to become an apprenticeships tutor?
I have been in the industry for over 20 years and have gained many qualifications and experience in this time that I use to help develop and upskill the next generation of dental nurses.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I wear many hats within the industry that includes working for the General Dental Council as an Education Associate, an NEBDN Independent End Point Assessor, Examiner and author for two dental textbooks.
